This thesis is a qualitative study that aims to describe the subjective experience of ayahuasca use in users who attended psychological therapy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a group of 8 adults, aged 22 to 52 years, who participated in both ayahuasca ceremonies and psychological therapy. Purposeful sampling was used. Participants decided to take ayahuasca with the hope of discovering something new about themselves. Ayahuasca’s psychological effects are diverse, encompassing interactive perceptions, challenging moments linked to fear, as well as epiphanic experiences accompanied by gratitude towards life and a sense of unity with nature. Participants discussed their ayahuasca experiences with their psychotherapists, expecting that doing so would help them understand it better, or expedite the therapeutic process. The integration of the ayahuasca experience into the therapeutic process was influenced by the psychotherapist’s attitude and familiarity with the practice. In some cases, the content of the ceremonies could be integrated by introducing new themes, directions and insights into therapy. In other cases, limitations to the therapeutic process were identified, including prejudice or a lack of knowledge about ayahuasca. In conclusion, it was found that the subjective experience of ayahuasca use has the potential to contribute beneficial elements to the psychotherapeutic process when mental health professionals are prepared and willing to do it.
