Objective: To determine the frequency and describe some characteristics of computer vision syndrome (CVS) in health sciences undergraduate students from Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) in 2021-2022 exposed to electronic device screens. Methods: Cross-sectional analytic study. Population composed of 371 health sciences students with university code 2010 to 2022 of a private university in Lima, Peru, enrolled in the academic years 2021-01, 2021-02 and/or 2022-01, in which the study in virtual modality prevailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The CVS-q (Computer Vision Syndrome Questionnaire) instrument validated in Peru will be used to measure CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) and its symptoms through a self-applied virtual questionnaire. Results: The frequency of CVS was 18.33%. The most frequent symptom reported was headache and the least frequent was double vision. The exposure time to electronic device screens of 91.11% of students was ≥ 5 hours daily. Among the participants 66% were women, the median age was 22 years (IQR: 21-23) and 69% had some visual impairment. An association was found with CVS and the variables neck stiffness, shoulder pain, astigmatism, the use of eye drops and the 20/20/20 rule (p < 0.05). CVS risk increased by sex (aRP: 3.63; CI 1.70-7.73), and suffering from sleep disorders (aPR: 1.56; CI 1.00-2.43). Taking breaks during device use was a protective factor for CVS (aPR: 0.49; CI 0.26-0.96). Conclusions: The frequency of SVC was 18.33%. Neck stiffness, shoulder pain, astigmatism, and the use of eye drops were the main variables associated with CVS found in this study. Sex and suffering from sleep disorders were the main risk factors for CVS found in this study. Taking breaks while using devices was a protective factor for CVS. On the other hand, it is recommended to practice the 20/20/20 rule as well as implement other preventive interventions.
