ASM is related to mercury exposure and its clinical consequences in vulnerable populations. Prevention strategies currently exist to reduce the health risks of mercury exposure in areas impacted by ASM. However, the strategies currently implemented do not achieve the objectives of the Minamata Convention. The objective of this present study was to synthesize the evidence reported in the literature on health prevention strategies aimed at reducing risks from mercury exposure in vulnerable populations in ASM-impacted areas, in accordance with the Minamata Convention. We conducted a qualitative systematic review with a descriptive narrative approach based on the guidelines developed by the Cochrane Group, a sample based on the variation of patterns was detected to select eligible studies, where we conducted a meta-synthesis of studies on the experience of the vulnerable population and studies based on the effectiveness of interventions, between 2013 and 2022. As for the results, four articles of mixed design, were included. Eleven findings were obtained and organized into four general themes: preventive strategies, clinical consequences, mercury exposure and vulnerable population. It is concluded that the risk perceptions and protective behaviors reported by the vulnerable ASM population with respect to mercury exposure and associated health risks are insufficient. There is evidence of inadequate monitoring and supervision of ASM, inadequate use of protective equipment and constant exposure to mercury due to poor practices and food contamination.
