The present research describes the affective bonding process of mothers of children with Down syndrome aged from 0 to 3 years. A qualitative study with a phenomenological design was developed. The semi-structured interview technique was used to obtain the information. Ten mothers between 20 and 40 years of age, whose first children were diagnosed with Down syndrome, participated in the study. Through the thematic analysis, the data were organized into 3 thematic axes: Pregnancy stage, postpartum stage and post-birth stage. The main results indicate that the affective bonding process begins in the pregnancy stage, where mothers idealize the image that their children will have at birth, full of expectations and desires. In addition, the diagnosis of Down syndrome configures a new unexpected reality for the mothers, this news generates them to go through emotional stages. In this sense, it is concluded that the affective bonding process of mothers is strengthened with their own personal resources, the support network and the achievements in the development of babies with Down syndrome.
