This professional competency work proposes a model to increase the reliability of drilling machines in a small underground mine through the implementation of a reliability centered maintenance program. After analyzing the problem, it was identified that the main causes of drilling machine failures were deficient predictive inspections, extended operation of components, and generic maintenance plans. These problems generate estimated annual economic losses of $243,000 dollars, in addition to affecting the productivity of the mine by 8%. The proposed solution involves implementing a Reliability Centered Maintenance program focused on mitigating those causes, which implies performing criticality analysis, predictive inspections, optimized preventive maintenance, and standardized checklists for critical components. The expected results were validated through a computerized simulation, which showed benefits such as a 45% reduction in functional failures, an 82% increase in MTBF, and a 1% improvement in the availability of the drilling machines. In addition, the economic viability of the project was supported with growing annual savings from $152,684 to $256,788 in the fifth year after an investment of $70,917 quickly recoverable due to its high IRR of 60%. In conclusion, the RCM reliability centered maintenance model is effective in increasing the operational reliability levels of the drilling machines, generating positive impacts on productivity, maintenance costs, and industrial safety. It is recommended to implement this proposal in the analyzed mining unit and extend the application of the model to other units of the company.
