Social polarization, understood as a phenomenon of division in societies around extreme positions of various kinds, has been deepening in the political sphere for some decades and is used as a strategy in electoral campaigns in order to generate divisions that benefit an ideological position or a particular candidate. Political polarization in the 21st century has found the best tools for disseminating its proposals in social networks. Whether due to the characteristics of social networks, their uses, the public that uses them or their content, the digital environment has become a new space for political polarization. The objective of this work was to compile various conceptual and communicational perspectives on political polarization in digital environments and to explore its main characteristics and effects. Being a descriptive-exploratory study, the methodology used was the systematic review of a convenience sample of scientific articles in databases of academic journals within the period 2017-2022, in Spanish and English.
