The popularity of social networks in recent years has increasingly aroused the interest of new users, who usually spend a very long amount of time. Therefore, it is important to know about the possible consequences that it can generate regarding mental health. The present systematic review aimed to identify the relationship between addiction to social networks and self-esteem in university students. To search for the articles, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed and four academic databases were used (Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus and PubMed). The keywords used for the search were “University students”, “Social media addiction”, “Self-esteem” and related terms. The search was carried out in the month of October 2023. Regarding the results, in the initial search 99 articles were found (31 duplicates) and 68 were reviewed in detail. Finally, 12 articles were included for review regarding their methodological quality through an adaptation of the PEDro scale. It is concluded that low self-esteem is a predictive factor for addiction to social media and that the gender has a mediating effect in the relationship between the two study variables, women obtained higher scores in addiction to social media compared to men, regardless of the level of self-esteem.
