There seems to be a consensus regarding the benefits of trade opening through international agreements, however, the dilemma persists regarding which of them is most efficient according to the economic structure of the countries. In this way, the creation of various international treaties has been promoted that can be classified as reciprocal or non-reciprocal. There are few studies that make a comparison between these types of agreements, especially for the South American case, and their true effects on economic growth. In this way, a new field of analysis is opened that allows us to pose the following research question: Do reciprocal agreements have a greater impact on economic growth compared to non-reciprocal agreements? In order to answer this question, this work proposes a data panel regression using the cointegration method for data between the years 1960 to 2018, studying South American countries such as Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and Colombia. Among the main results, it is evident that reciprocal agreements generate better levels of growth compared to other types of treaties. Likewise, manufacturing exports turned out to be more significant than primary exports on economic development. However, through the disaggregated analysis it was evident that the inclusion of these agreements generates a lower impact on the effects of exports with respect to growth. This is due to external factors related to import preferences according to the type and quality of products and services.
