Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between breastfeeding counseling and exclusive breastfeeding among Peruvian mothers during the years 2005, 2010, and 2015. Materials and Methods: A secondary data analysis was conducted using information from the Peruvian Demographic and Health Survey (ENDES) of the years 2005, 2010, and 2015. The sample consisted of mothers aged 15 to 49 who responded to the individual questionnaire and had complete data for the variables of interest. A generalized linear model with Poisson log link was used to calculate crude (PRc) and adjusted (PRa) prevalence ratios. All estimates were made with a 95% confidence level. Results: The final sample included 2868 children under 6 months, with a prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding of 65.4%. The results of the analysis did not show a significant association between breastfeeding counseling and the practice of exclusive breastfeeding. However, associations were found with other factors such as type of delivery, geographic region, and level of education. No association was found between receiving counselling and SCI for the years 2005 (PRa: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.73 - 1.08), 2010 (PRa: 1.03, 95% CI: 0.92 - 1.18), 2015 (PRa: 1.00, 95% CI: 0.92 - 1.09) and total population (PRa: 1.00, 95% CI: 0.92 - 1.09). Conclusion: Our findings did not find an association between breastfeeding counseling and the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among Peruvian mothers. This is because the survey only asks about counseling, but it cannot determine whether the messages received had an impact or were of quality. We recommend that further studies be carried out to study in greater detail the messages being transmitted and the quality and frequency of these messages.
