Objective: To explore the association between social stigma and symptoms of depression and anxiety, in the health personnel of a public hospital in Lima, Peru, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional analytical observational study conducted among health professionals in a public hospital in Lima, Peru, between February and March 2022. The stigma scale and the SRQ-18 questionnaire were used to measure stigma and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety, respectively. Bivariate analysis was performed using the chi-square and t-student test. Multivariate analysis was performed, estimating crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) using Poisson regression with robust variance. 95% confidence intervals were reported, and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: 168 participants were included, of whom 80% were female and the average age was 35 years. The prevalence of social stigma was 23.81% and of symptoms of depression and/or anxiety 25.60%. Social stigma was associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety, independent of the presence of pre-existing psychiatric illness, sex, marital status and service area (RPa: 2.53; 95% CI: 1.56 - 4.10; p<0.001). Conclusions: 1 in 4 health professionals reported symptoms of depression and/or anxiety, while 1 in 5 felt stigmatized. Social stigmatization was related to symptoms of depression and anxiety, independently of potential confounding variables. Future studies should explore the causal relationship between social stigma and the development of mental health illnesses such as depression and anxiety.
