The subject of this thesis is the journalistic coverage of the online edition of the newspaper El Comercio during the Covid-19 health crisis in the first stage of the mandatory social confinement from March 16 to 30, 2020. This research is of great importance because it is relevant to analyze how was the news coverage given by one of the most important newspapers in the country in its online edition, since due to the mandatory social confinement, digital platforms gained greater prominence. Therefore, the way in which El Comercio reported and constructed the news in relation to the issue is relevant, since it is assumed that being a newspaper of great prestige and reliability for the people, it should have had a journalistic coverage to match. However, it was shown that the newspaper did not perform well at this stage and reported the events in a superficial manner. Therefore, this thesis analyzes previous studies on this topic, which, although limited, have served to contextualize the facts. Therefore, the general objective of this study is: Specify the characteristics that had the journalistic coverage of the newspaper El Comercio in its online edition during the sanitary crisis of Covid-19 in the first stage of the mandatory social confinement from March 16 to 30, 2020. In addition, as specific objectives it focuses on specifying the characteristics of the headlines and news articles in the period of time already specified. For this purpose, the methodology used will be a non-experimental research design since it is proposed to analyze a given case in a real context where the variables have not been altered. Therefore, this thesis analyzes previous studies on this subject, which, although limited, have served to contextualize the facts. Therefore, this study provides an in-depth analysis with a broader context in relation to what happened during the first stage of the mandatory quarantine and how El Comercio showed sensationalist news coverage both in its news articles and headlines. This was verified after analyzing the newspaper's publications in its online version from March 16 to 30, the stage in which the mandatory confinement was declared and which was decisive in the fight against the virus. In this way, it was found that the newspaper presented contents with sensationalist characteristics since its main objective was economic rather than providing quality information content to Peruvians, corroborating the hypothesis of this thesis.
