Infrastructure is currently one of the largest sources of investment worldwide. This investment can be affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes. According to the Center of Risk Studies, the loss caused by earthquakes of high magnitude is approximately 33.96 billion USD of the global GDP, thus, emphasis should be given to the factors that influence damage to structures in order to minimize losses. An influential factor in the behavior of a structure is the load movement. This has been evaluated in different investigations, which have made similar analyses on bridges, beams and slabs. In these it was evidenced that seismic excitations amplify the effects of live loads and that their movement influences the response of the structure, being the speed, weight, eccentricity of the load and the material of the structure important factors. Therefore, it is estimated that the influence produced by a moving mass on a building is significant. The present investigation evaluates the case of an essential building, in order to define the range of influence on the structural behavior by quantifying the effect of the moving mass of the occupants during an earthquake. For this purpose, scenarios where an evacuation is simulated in an educational building have been modeled by applying the spectral modal analysis method. Finally, some important results such as the variation of the structural response (basal shear, periods and maximum drifts) were obtained in each case influenced by the mass variation.
