Along with the advent of deepfakes, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for the creation of visual effects was not long in coming within the film industry. There is a lot of talk about how AI creates ethical and moral debates about its inclusion in the creation of art, but very little about how these technologies are being leveraged within the post-production stage of the audiovisual industry. Three representative samples were selected from platforms such as YouTube, in order to gain further insight into the deep learning models most commonly used by content creators and the prevailing practices around these technologies. This knowledge was put into practice by applying it to a specific context, in order to validate the theoretical understanding through participant observation. This contribution analyzes how the integration of AI within the visual effects post-production process facilitates the realization of complex visual effects, such as style transfer, with fewer resources and in a more efficient manner. Secondly, it is found that AI provides greater creative freedom to artists involved in visual effects post-production by offering them new tools and possibilities to explore and experiment in visual storytelling. Finally, it is discussed how the inclusion of these technologies runs the risk of devaluing the visual effects in narrative terms and falling into pastiche.
