The research for a Material Recovery Facility and Environmental Interpretation Center is motivated by the interest of contributing, at some level, to the environmental regeneration and the improvement of environmental quality after identifying that solid waste management in the city of Lima is one of the main factors of environmental pollution associated to harmful repercussions on the health of the population. Two different architectural typologies are proposed for the project in response to two needs: an industrial facility that classifies and adequate inorganic solid waste (plastic, paper-cardboard, glass and metal) to satisfy an underserved recycling market and avoid waste disposal in landfills, which are reaching their maximum capacity; and a cultural facility that promotes awareness and good environmental practices, since the actions of uninformed citizens are the cause of environmental pollution problems such as the improper waste disposal on public roads and natural areas. It is pertinent to analyze and propose both a productive and an awareness approach to achieve a complementary and comprehensive solution, where the Material Recovery Facility can serve as an exhibition for visitors to see the ongoing recovery process; and, in turn, the Interpretation Center can promote the waste separation at the source so that a greater quantity of inorganic waste reaches the project to be recovered and recycled.
