In Shonen and Romcom genre manga, discursive paratextual elements represent a significant resource widely used by fan translators. This practice, widespread in scanlation communities, presents a phenomenon of textual intervention, whose communicative purpose varies according to each discursive paratext. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the function of discursive paratextual elements in scanlation translations of Shonen and Romcom genre manga produced by amateur translator groups. This work focuses on five manga scanlations, exploring the characteristics, functions, and textual interventions present in them through discursive paratextual elements. The methodology is based on a qualitative research design with two data production techniques. Firstly, a contrastive analysis is carried out to compare the selected English (Target language) and Japanese (Source text) manga and thus identify and classify the discursive paratextual elements present in the scanlations. Subsequently, a content analysis is carried out on the TMs that allows for a deeper understanding of the textual intervention and communicative purpose of these elements. This methodological approach provides a clear vision of how fan translators incorporate discursive paratextual elements into scanlations and their impact on them. Through this analysis, a deeper understanding was obtained of the role discursive paratextual elements play in manga translation by scanlation groups.
