This investigation evaluates an audio description for visually impaired people on “Uchuraccay” exhibition based on photographs of the massacre of eight journalists in 1983. The exhibition is part of the permanent exhibition of the Place of Memory, Tolerance and Social Inclusion (LUM). Six guidelines and standards were selected to guarantee the quality of the audio description process, with emphasis on the credibility and relevance of the information, taking into consideration the violence represented by these images and the political function of memorial museums. Through a focus group, this study evaluates the results of the perception of visually impaired people based on their experiences, assessments, and knowledge of the Peru’s period of violence (1980-2000). In order to determine the applicability, an analysis of the audio description guidelines and standards, the images and their importance within the curated exhibition was conducted. Since the LUM is a museum of memory that aims at a neutral curatorial approach towards the reconciliation of the various those involved in the period of violence, a thorough research was conducted on the facts and guidelines of the LUM, which allowed the creation of a neutral script. This research seeks to reflect on the universal accessibility of visually impaired people in Peru, where having resources such as audio description would allow them to participate in social processes of reflection and reconciliation through memories that facilitate discussion towards a culture of peace and solidarity.
