This paper investigates the macroeconomic determinants of credit risk through non-performing loans, in the banking system of the economies belonging to the Pacific Alliance. We measure credit risk as the ratio of non-performing loans to total gross loans (NPLs) and employ dynamic panel data methods over the period 2005-2018. Using two econometrics models, the results show that an increase in the real GDP growth rate has a statistically and economically significant reducing effect on the ratio of non-performing loans to total gross loans. In addition, the inflation rate, domestic credit to the private sector by banks as a percentage of GDP, trade openness, the VIX as an indicator of global volatility and the 2008/2009 global financial crisis should have a positive and significant impact on non-performing loans. Credit risk is represented by non-performing loans, which comes to consist of loans as well as advances with delinquency period of 90 days or more depending on their maturity date. Much of the research that attempts to study the determinants of credit risk is based mostly in advanced economies, as well as in emerging markets, possibly due to their data availability. In that sense this research paper takes this gap by focusing on macroeconomic factors of credit risk calculated as the ratio of non-performing loans to total gross loans focusing on the before mentioned countries of the region during the period 2005 - 2018.
