In the present work, the objective was to prolong the useful life of the Poechos reservoir with the operation of a dam located upstream in the upper part of the Quiroz basin to reduce the amount of sediment that arrives the aforementioned reservoir. First of all, the hydrographic basin was delimited in the ArcMAP, taking as the outlet point the coordinates where the new dam will be located. Second of all, we generate precipitation records from the PISCO database to perform a hydrological model in the HEC – HMS and determine the maximum flow and the dimensions of the spillway. Third of all, data of monthly average flows and the demands of the users of the Chira River were collected to use the algorithm of subsequent top and find the useful volume. In addition, the dead volume was estimated for a useful life of 50 years. Finally, the altitude of each of the characteristic volumes of the reservoir, the height of the free board and the total height of the dam were determined. To conclude, the proposed construction and operation of the new dam will not have significant impacts on prolonging the useful life of the Poechos reservoir because it would only prevent that a minimum amount of sediment enter annually.
