The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that have contributed to the evolution of hip hop musical productions in the city of Lima, with a view to the construction of a new sound identity. Considering a qualitative approach, which contemplates the registration files and individual interviews, this research develops a scheme that begins with a contextualization of American hip hop, in which its origins, musical characteristics and the classifications of its compositions according to the content of its lyrics are exposed. Next, in order to determine the factors that have influenced the evolution of the genre in the capital, the introduction of hip hop music in Peru, the transformation it has undergone and the consequences for rap music in the city since Internet access. In the last section, to show what elements have been chosen by artists in their new proposals and how these are a sign of an identity construction, the positions of important authors who explain various conceptions of the term identity are presented. In addition, the Peruvian musical elements present in the new concept of rap music are shown through different productions. Finally, the resources used by rappers to expose their proposals to a global audience are analyzed.
