Introduction: Acute diarrheal disease (ADD) is responsible for 1,5 to 2 million deaths of children under five years of age annually, placing it as the second leading cause of infant death worldwide. This infectious disease has several risk factors; however, one of the ways to prevent it is by taking correct actions related to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). Objective: To determine the level of knowledge and practices of mothers about WASH and its association with the presence of EDA in their children under 5 years of age in the last two weeks. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study carried out at the Ollantay Maternal and Child Center (CMI) in San Juan de Miraflores between the months of January to March 2020. Results: 53,19% of the mothers interviewed obtained a low level of knowledge and practices in WASH. 15,43% of all children studied had EDA in the last two weeks. Children whose mothers have a low level of WASH knowledge and practice are 2,60 more likely to have ADD than children whose mothers have a high level of WASH knowledge and practice (p = 0,002, 95,00% CI: 1,43 – 4,75). Conclusions: Most of the mothers interviewed at the CMI Ollantay had a low level of knowledge and practices in WASH. The variable that is performed the least by mothers is rubbing their hands for 20 seconds. It is recommended to implement talks and practical workshops on the correct hand washing technique at CMI Ollantay.
