Objective: to evaluate if there is an association with iodine concentration in the salt of Peruvian homes using the national population survey ENDES. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study based on the secondary analysis of the ENDES 2016-2019. Women 15-49 years old who have sexual relations, want to have more children, do not report amenorrhea or sterilization, and do not use contraceptives were included. Infertility self-report was defined as responding infertility as the reason for not using any contraceptive method. Household salt was evaluated with Yoditest, which reports iodine levels of 0, 7, 15 and 30 ppm. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) were calculated using Poisson regression with robust variance. Results: 23,263 women and equal number of households were included. Only 5.2% showed salt without iodine while 78.1% had salt with >30ppm. 9.3% of the women self-reported infertility. There was no association between iodine concentration and infertility self-report in the crude and adjusted analysis. Some adjustment factors were associated with infertility self-report including older age; Quechua or Aymara language; BMI low weight or morbid obesity; and diabetes mellitus. In contrast, secondary or higher education was associated with less self-reported infertility. Conclusions: There was no association between the levels of iodine in household salt with infertility self-report. Instead, multiple sociodemographic characteristics were identified as associated to infertility self-report that could serve as hypothesis for further investigations.
