Introduction: The violence between two individuals who share a relationship is currently one of the many public health conflicts of consideration in the last decade. The aim of the study is to determine the association between emotional symptoms experienced in adolescence and partner violence in adulthood. Methodology: We conducted a secondary analysis of a population of 608 participants from the third and fifth round of the Peruvian base of the larger cohort of the “Niños del Milenio del Peru” study. The exposure variable: emotional symptoms, was measured with the emotional symptoms dimension of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Multivariate analysis was performed by applying Poisson regression from which raw and adjusted PRs with 95%CI were calculated. Results: The prevalence of physical or psychological violence was 10.7%. No association was found between emotional symptoms experienced in adolescence between 14 and 15 years of age and being a victim of physical or psychological partner violence in young adults between 22 and 23 years of age in the study “Niños del Milenio del Peru”. As a secondary finding, showing that those who were separated were 8.3 times more likely to be victims of physical and/or psychological intimate partner violence than those who were single (p<0.001). Discussion: An association between emotional symptoms and being a victim of violence could not be corroborated. More research of a longitudinal nature and using different instruments is needed.
