Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between coffee consumption and anxiety levels in medical students from a private university in Lima (Peru) during the year 2020. Methods: We developed an analytical cross-sectional study and collected the information through an online form. 86 medical students were interviewed and 2 participants were excluded because they were taking medications for anxiety. Our study population were medical students from a private university in Lima in the 2020-01 cycle who took 3 to 7 subjects and were in an age range of 18 to 25 years. In order to quantify the level of anxiety, GAD 7 was used, which is a questionnaire with high sensitivity and specificity to identify cases of generalized anxiety and assess the severity of symptoms. Results: 86% of the population drank coffee and from this group, 20.3% consumed more than 3 cups per day. Of the interviewees, 77.9% consumed it with caffeine and 84.9% suffered from anxiety. Of the students with anxiety, 90.1% consumed coffee and 83.1% with caffeine content. Finally, it was found that those who consume this drink are 1.9 times more likely to suffer anxiety (PR 1.9, 95% CI 1.1 - 3.3, p <0.05) compared to those who do not consume it. Conclusions: There is an association between coffee consumption and higher levels of anxiety presented in the studied group.
