Depression is a global public health problem that represents one of the main causes of disability. In Peru, the most frequent mental disorder in Lima Metropolitana and Callao during 2012 was the depressive episode, which was associated with an increased prevalence in people with alcohol abuse problems. Objective: To verify the association between alcohol consumption and depressive symptomatology in Demographic and Family Health Survey 2017’s participants. Method: Observational cross-sectional study. Data was obtained from ENDES 2017’s database. The total population surveyed was 34099 people, from which 240 surveys were considered for data analysis. 86.25% of the respondents are men and 13.75% are women. Age range is from 18 to 60 years. Results: It was found that moderate alcohol use disorder is associated with depressive symptoms such as "difficulty performing daily activities" (OR 3.68 p: 0.04 ; IC: 1.05 - 12.78) and “Sleep problems in the last 14 days” (OR 3.54 p: 0.05 ; IC: 1.01 - 13.72). Likewise, severe alcohol use disorder is associated with "Feeling depressed during the last 14 days" (OR 7.93 p: 0.05; IC: 1.03 - 81.78). In addition, it was found that "Lack of interest during the last 14 days" was associated with the female sex (OR: 3.31 p: 0.025 ; IC: 1.16 – 9.45) and with people who have only completed primary school (OR 4.97 p: 0.014; IC: 1.37 – 17.95). Conclusion: Moderate and severe alcohol use disorder is associated with depressive symptomatology, as is the female sex and having only completed primary school.
