Introduction: Depression is a highly prevalent health problem in young adults. Previous studies have suggested that a healthy diet could exert a protective factor against depression. Objective: Determine the association between a healthy diet and the presence of depressive symptoms in university students aged 18 to 25 years in Metropolitan Lima. Methods: Cross-sectional study developed between August 2021 and April 2022. Data collection was carried out in Google Forms. Crude prevalence ratios (PRc) and adjusted prevalence ratios (PRa) were calculated using generalized linear models of the Poisson family to assess the association between healthy eating and depressive symptoms, including potential confounding factors in the adjusted model. Healthy eating was assessed using the IASE questionnaire and depressive symptoms using the PHQ-9 questionnaire. All analyzes were performed in Stata version 16.0. Results: 826 participants were included. Depressive symptoms were present in 35.71% of participants, while 13.92% had a healthy diet. Healthy eating was significantly associated with depressive symptoms (RPa: 3.63; 95% CI: 1.93 to 6.86; p<0.001). Other variables significantly associated were family dysfunction, poor sleep quality, female gender, low social support, low weight, overweight, obesity, and academic burnout. Conclusions: The probability of presenting depressive symptoms was significantly lower in people with a healthy diet after controlling confounding factors. Additional studies are required to determine a cause-effect relationship between these two variables.
