Background: Currently, cases of intimate partner violence are reported in which women are the perpetrators of aggression towards men. This panorama helps to reconsider that the role of women in violence can be that of perpetrator and/or victim. Longitudinal studies have identified the association between the victimization of women in intimate partner violence and subsequent alcohol consumption. Most research has focused on the relationship between alcohol consumption and male aggression or female victimization; however, the association between alcohol consumption and aggression by women has been little visualized. Objective: This study aimed to identify the association between physical partner violence either perpetrated or victimization in Peruvian women and excessive alcohol consumption. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study secondary to the Demographic and Family Health Survey 2015-2019, Peru, in which women with information on violence and alcohol consumption were included and those without information on perpetration and who did not have privacy were excluded when inquiring about violence. The main variable “victim and/or perpetrator“ was classified as: “She was neither a victim nor a perpetrator“, “Only a victim of violence“, “Only a perpetrator“ and “Perpetrator and victim“. Excessive alcohol consumption was considered, according to the CDC classification, “Yes“ when the number of standardized drinks in women was greater than 4 and “No“ when it was less than 4. Crude and adjusted multivariate analysis was performed using the Generalized Linear Model (GLM) of the family and the Log Poisson link option, and the results were presented in prevalence ratios (PR). Results: When performing the multivariate analysis adjusted for confounding variables, it was found that compared to women who did not report violence, female perpetrators had 2.06 times the probability of having excessive alcohol consumption (PRa 2.06, CI 95% 1,51 - 2,81 p <0.001); while those who were victims and perpetrators were 99% more likely to have excessive consumption (PRa 1.99, CI 95% 1,45 - 2,75 p < 0.001) and those who were only victims 23% more of excessive consumption (PRa 1.23, CI 95% 1,02 - 1,48 p=0.024). Conclusions: An association was found between physical partner violence and excessive alcohol consumption in a descending gradient, with the probability of excessive consumption being greater in women who were perpetrators, followed by women who were perpetrators and victims, and finally in women who were only victims.
