Introduction: In the last 20 years, pandemics, epidemics and outbreaks of respiratory viruses have affected different sectors of the population. The health sector has been the most affected area, since health personnel are the first line that cares for the population in hospitals. Due to this, situations of severe stress and exhaustion are generated in health personnel, which generates various short- and long-term mental complications. One of the mental complications studied is post-traumatic stress in health workers, since it causes negative effects on quality of life and economic health losses. Objective: To qualitatively explore the management and interventions on the development of post-traumatic stress; based on experiences of health personnel during outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics by respiratory viruses, from 1980 to 2020. Methods: Qualitative systematic review of interventions to prevent and manage post-traumatic stress during outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics in health personnel from 1980 to 2020. Rayyan QCRI software was used for blinding, which analyzed the results and eliminated the duplicate items. These articles were selected by both authors independently, according to our inclusion criteria. In addition, the methodological limitations of the attached articles in the study were evaluated, with the critical reading evaluation system (CASPe) for qualitative studies. This study followed the guidelines of the PRISMA statement. Likewise, the confidence in our findings was evaluated with the GRADE Cerqual tool. Results: We identified five thematic axes and nine individual findings, respectively. These general themes represent the interventions, based on the experiences of health personnel, during the various health crises. Likewise, it was evidenced that resilience is a tool for adaptation, improvement and generation of trust, in the face of events that are difficult to handle. In addition, it was seen that social and work support; stimulates the strength and security of health personnel, and encourages them to continue working in patient care. Other important measures were the implementation of flexible work schedules, training for inexperienced personnel, which improved safety at work and reduced post-traumatic stress. Conclusions: All these strategies were supported in previous studies, and it was explored that they decreased post-traumatic stress, especially in the outbreaks of H1N1 and SARS-COV2. It is for this reason that it is necessary to implement new regulations and policies in the health system, aimed at managing post-traumatic stress, since this pathology incapacitates and interferes with the daily activities of health personnel.
