The present study compares stress among parents of children with Down syndrome according to the degree of functional disability. Background: In 2018, in Perú, a thesis was presented at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru that measured the level of parental stress in parents of children with Down syndrome. The conclusion of this study was that 81.48% of the respondents presented normal levels of parental stress without clinical significance. Objective: To compare the levels of parental stress in parents of children with Down syndrome who attend the pediatric rehabilitation area of the Edgardo Rebagliati Martins National Hospital in the years 2019-2021 according to the degree of functional disability provided by the National Council on Disability (CONADIS). Design: This is an analytical cross-sectional study looking for the association between exposure (having a child with Down syndrome) and condition (stress) in a defined population (parents of children with Down syndrome). The measurement of the variables was carried out in a single opportunity. Results: In the study carried out, it was found that almost all the surveyed population were women. This could be because mothers are the ones who take more responsibility for the rehabilitation and upbringing of children. Likewise, it was found that 85% of the children whose parents were surveyed presented a moderate degree of disability. On the other hand, it was found that parents who belong to the lowest economic level, were those who suffer from higher levels of stress. Finally, according to the multivariate analysis carried out in the study, a trend of risk factors was found between parental stress and the degree of severe disability, as well as the presence of comorbidities and family income. Conclusions: The present study concludes that more than 50% of the parents studied present a clinically significant level of stress. Also, parents whose children have a severe degree of disability, are those who have a higher score in stress levels. On the other hand, family income could be an influential factor in variations in parental stress levels. Regarding the gender of the parents, it was found that the mothers are the ones with high clinically significant stress scores compared to the fathers. Finally, the residence of the family in the capital could have a protective factor that does not negatively influence stress.
