Communication media (CM) are considered an important source of health information, since they can help prepare the population by raising awareness and dispelling speculation, rumors and messages that cause panic in the population during a given situation, such as a pandemic. During the coronavirus pandemic, the characteristics of the news about the COVID-19 issued by the Peruvian communication media (CM) in the period from January 22nd of 2020 to February 7th of 2021 were studied. For this study, the MCs of El Comercio, Radio Programas del Peru (RPP) and Latina were considered. These characteristics were classified according to framing, estimation (informative, news with high perception of risk of contagion and death (NHPRCD), informative and educational, and NHPRCD and educational) and journalistic coverage (fast and specialized); In addition, the data was collected in 3 phases. A descriptive study of the main study variables was performed. The framing of the news was focused on the socioeconomic and mental impact (35.25%) and actions of the MINSA/other national and international institutions (21.30%). The estimation of the news was mainly informative (83.08%) and only 0.69% of the news were NHPRCD; these were most frequently published by Latina. The news had mostly fast journalistic coverage (83.47%). The largest collection of news occurred during phase 2 and the largest flow occurred in the months of March and April. In 2020, the CM had a responsible attitude when reporting, however, there was a small percentage of NEPRCM that could have generated alarm in the population.
