Background: Euthanasia and assisted suicide are increasingly common practices, used by people who suffer from a chronic illness. The role of the psychologist is essential in these processes with patients and family members. People who choose for euthanasia or assisted suicide want to obtain a dignified death through these, since they have experienced a process of suffering and limitations. Objective: The objective of this research was to describe the perceptions and attitudes towards euthanasia and assisted suicide of Peruvian clinical psychologists specialized in terminal illnesses. Method: The research was guided from the qualitative approach with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Seven psychologists participated. Results: The findings of this research illustrate that the perception around euthanasia and assisted suicide determines an attitude that, in turn, bases the role of the psychologist (it acts as a companion, validating the affections and decisions of all the characters involved (patients and family). From this role, psychologists employ constant accompaniment and validation for the patient’s decision. Perceptions are organized according to the social relevance of euthanasia and assisted suicide. From this, it was found that two positions are manifested: for and against. Conclusions: It is concluded that the participants perceive, think and feel regarding these issues will determine their professional practice, validating the decision of the patients so that they can have the death they want, a “death with dignity”.
