The purpose of this document is to systematically review and examine the existing knowledge about the impact that the application of the corporate governance model has on family businesses, how it affects their organization and performance, and to establish an agenda for future research. During the review and analysis of the articles selected for this study, it was found that in general terms, the impact of the adoption of corporate governance in family businesses is positive, as it helps to improve their structures and processes and, therefore, ensure that they are better directed, controlled and strengthen their ethics. Currently corporate governance is applied to a limited extent in family businesses in Latin America, however, these same companies are discovering its importance worldwide. Therefore, the concept of corporate governance and its applicability in Latin American family businesses is a challenge for these organizations. The recognized positive effects of corporate governance in family businesses with good management are the complacency of family members and shareholders knowing that their rights are protected, the trust and credibility generated in the company by finding established the roles of all parties and applying the principles of transparency and good communication. Therefore, a good strategy in the implementation of corporate governance also increases competitiveness, provides better financial results and allows the organization to last over time. However, not all experts on the subject fully share this thought, as there are many variables to evaluate, since not all companies are the same. The axes used to show the effects of each type of corporate governance are the participation of the family in the board of directors of the management team, the performance of the family business, the distribution of dividends, transparency and corruption. These will allow us to better observe how this management model operates under different contexts.
