The demand of manga consumption in different languages boosted the creation of scanlation projects, which are made up of fans with different motivations, to provide the consumer audience the opportunity to have access to mangas in their mother tongues. Moreover, in recent decades, Translation Studies have turned their attention to the agents and their functions within the translation processes. Therefore, the present study analyzes the phenomena of agency and scanlation in order to determine the degree of agency that the scanlator translator has in a group of manga scanlation. For this purpose, the study will identify the stages followed by the group to translate, the agents involved and the status they have. In this sense, first, the group may follow a translation process similar to the stages proposed by Lee (2009) and Mayor (2021). Second, the translator may have a higher status and; therefore, a high degree of agency that benefits his or her decision-making. Third, agents may have more than one type and level of agency due to their participation in more than one stage during the translation process. This study will use the case study method and semi-structured interviews to collect the information.
