Objective: To evaluate the association between the use of social networks to access fad diets and the choice of foods marketed as healthy in women residing in Metropolitan Lima. Methods: A quantitative study with analytical cross-sectional design was conducted through an online survey of 305 adult women in Lima during July and August 2021. Results: 80% bought at least 1 product marketed as healthy, 45,3% accessed social networks once a week to search for content on fad diets and 28,2% chose YouTube as their preferred social network for this purpose. Likewise, 86,2% presented a significant association between using social networks once a week and choosing foods marketed as healthy. The most used social network for this purpose, the most influential social network in food choice, exclusionary and liquid diets also have significant values. Regression analysis found that women who use social networks are 1,69 more likely to purchase any food marketed as healthy relative to women who do not use a preferred social network for this purpose. Conclusions: The choice of foods marketed as healthy is associated with the search for fad diets through social networks and considering what has been found, these can put users at risk with contradictory information about food and food products.
