Background: Language development is of vital importance in childhood. Low socioeconomic status represents a risk factor for children's neurocognitive development, affecting both language and memory development. Likewise, the mother's education is an important factor for language development in young children. Objective: To determine the association between Socioeconomic Status (SES) and Effective Verbal Communication (EVC) in children aged 9 to 36 months, according to the mother's level of education. Peru 2018 and 2019. Materials and methods: A secondary analytical cross-sectional study was developed based on the ENDES Peru 2018-2019 database. The population included children aged 9 to 36 months. The independent variable SES was constructed based on INEI’s methodology in 5 wealth quintiles (I to V), which were then regrouped into 3 categories: high (IV and V), medium (III) and low (I and II). EVC, which corresponds to the dependent variable, was assessed based on the Battelle Development Instrument (Communication Area). To identify the association between SES and EVC, generalized linear models (GLM) of family and log Poisson link choice were used. The results were presented in prevalence ratios (PR). Results: In the overall model adjusted for sex, age in months, birth weight and physical punishment by either parent, compared to high SES children, low SES children were 16% less likely to have adequate EVC (RPa 0.84 95% CI 0.79; 0.88, p<0.001). While there was no association in middle SES children (RPa 1.00 95% CI 0.94; 1.07, p=0.99). In the adjusted models stratified according to maternal educational level, it was found that in those children of mothers with an education level of high school or less, compared to children of high SES, those of low SES were 13.0% less likely to have adequate ECV (RPa 0.87 CI 95% 0.80; 0.95, p= 0.003), while in those of middle SES no association was found (RPa 1. 0 95% CI 0.90; 1.11, p=0.948), while in the stratified model for mothers with higher non-university education or more it was found that, compared to high SES children, neither low nor middle SES children were associated with adequate ECV (RPa 0.94 95% CI 0.86; 1.02, p= 0.142 and RPa 1.07 95% CI 0.98; 1.16, p= 0.123 respectively). Conclusion: Our study found an association between low SES and lower adequate ECV in children aged 9 to 36 months. In children of mothers with secondary education level or less, low SES was associated with lower adequate ECV. While in children of mothers with non-university higher education level or higher, no such association was found.
