Introduction: Mental disorders constitute some of the leading causes of disability around the world. According to the WHO, one in nine prisoners experience some mental health disorder, supporting the high prevalence of mental disorders in adolescent and juvenile inmates, however, the prevalence in the juvenile population who are diagnosed within prison is unknown. Materials and methods: Secondary analysis of the 2016 National Population Census database in Juvenile Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Centres conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) was carried out. The population consisted of all inmates in 10 diagnostic and rehabilitation juvenile centres nationwide who had not been diagnosed with depression prior to their admission to the prison. The dependent variable was new cases of depression diagnosed by a health professional and reported by the inmates and the independent variables were age, sex, concomitant mental health illnesses, leaving home by the inmate, among others. Results: The average age of the inmates was 17 years (IQR 16;18) and there was a male predominance (95.9%). Also, 1.4% of inmates had a medical diagnosis of depression after admission to the prison. Inmates who left home before the age of 15 years were found to have 2.4 times the prevalence of new diagnoses of depression (p=0.01; CI=1.2;4.7). In addition, inmates with a medical diagnosis of anxiety, had 7.2 times higher prevalence of new diagnoses of depression compared to inmates without this diagnosis (p<0.001, CI=3.3;15.7). Conclusions: Significant association was found between leaving home before the age of 15 years and medical diagnosis of anxiety with the prevalence of new depression.
