The current work proposes the implementation of an electronic alert system and event log of specific risks based in the monitoring of temperature and humidity, and automatic people counting in closed restricted areas. Nowadays, the existing products have limitations as they are high cost and don’t perform an integral monitoring of people capacity counting and environmental conditions. The proposed system uses an algorithm based in convolutional neural networks for people counting from images captured by a digital camera. Also, 4 wireless temperature and humidity sensor nodes were implemented, each one with capability to take measurements with 3 sensors. The developed software was implemented on a single board computer, which sends the results from the people counting system and the measurements of environment conditions to a database located in a remote server. Finally, the acquired data is then accessible through a web application for monitoring and evaluation. A people counting success rate of 92.10% was obtained in entry scenarios of up to 4 people in a 3.8 x 3 m. room, under artificial and natural lighting. Also, an absolute error of 0.3° C was obtained in a temperature scenario above 27° C; and 2.2% RH in a relative humidity scenario greater than 80% RH. Finally, a message reception rate of 99.65% at 7.5 m. was obtained for the wireless communication between the nodes and the central station.
