Peru has a diglossic reality which means that Spanish is positioned as the dominant language and the native languages are relegated to oral use. This reality is evident in the healthcare services, which do not usually provide their services in native languages to the patients who need it. Therefore, patients opt to be accompanied by a family member, relative or acquaintance who facilitates communication between them and the medical staff; these companions are known as ad hoc interpreters. Although there is research of the work of ad hoc interpreters, the power relationships within ad hoc interpreting have not been studied in depth. For this reason, this investigation seeks to analyze the construction of power relations during ad hoc medical interpreting at the Hospital Nacional Edgardo Rebagliati Martins in Lima. For this purpose, we propose to apply direct and non-participant observation as a method for the collection of information concerning the interaction that takes place during the communicative situation, in which the interpretation occurs, as well as the recording of the discourse emitted by the participants of the interaction by means of voice recording.
