Depression and anxiety are the main mental health problems, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, its prevalence increased. The implemented measures caused the cessation of work and a decrease in income. Economic changes are known to increase mental disorders, which explains the current increase in cases. Objective: To assess the association between economic changes and the frequency of depressive symptoms and anxiety in young adults from the Young Lives cohort during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: A secondary analysis of 1547 “Listening to Young Lives at Work” telephone survey participants from the younger and older cohort was conducted. The outcome variables, depressive symptoms and anxiety, were measured with the PHQ-8 and GAD-7, respectively. Both were categorized in the presence or absence of depressive or anxiety symptoms. Exposure, economic changes, was categorized as 1 - 2, 3 - 4, and ≥ 5 changes. A crude and adjusted multinomial logistic regression model was built, which allowed the relative prevalence ratio (RPR) as a measure of association to be calculated. A confidence interval of 95% and a significant p < 0.05 would be considered. Results: Among young people with anxiety and depressive symptoms compared to those who did not appear, it was shown that presenting both conditions was 2.15 times higher in young people who went through three to four economic changes compared to those who went through one. to two changes. Conclusion: A significant association was found between economic changes and the presence of depressive symptoms and anxiety.
