Objective. The research explored the study of mental representations about motherhood in elderly first-time mothers. Methodology. A qualitative study with an interpretive phenomenological design was developed with six women aged between 35 to 44 years, who participated in an in-depth semi-structured interview. Results. It was found that the elderly mothers presented a set of feelings and fears, loaded with strong levels of anguish, related to the possible loss or failure of the baby. They also evidenced a constant pressure linked to the desire to perform the maternal role to perfection, generating feelings of guilt in the face of non-fulfillment of their own expectations. Conclusion. It was evidenced that late-age mothers construct maternal representations from their own experience of pregnancy, the experience of motherhood, the representation of relationships with other figures and from the assumption of roles. Contribution. It had a theoretical contribution, expanding the theoretical framework and background for future research; and also, a social contribution, giving recognition to the future development of possible psychological interventions aimed at mothers.
