Introduction: COVID-19 disease is a viral infection that has had a major global impact since it can present as a severe pneumonia that can lead to acute respiratory failure. It has been shown that most complications are associated with higher levels of inflammatory cytokines. However, up to this date there are no national studies that investigate the role of these markers in patients with COVID-19. Objectives: To determine plasma concentrations of Zinc and Interleukin - 6 as biomarkers of severity in patients with COVID-19, Lima - Peru, 2021. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional study. Serum IL 6 and Zinc measurements were performed in ICU and non-ICU hospitalized patients at “Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara '' and non-hospitalized patients samples came from the Nutritional Research Center in Lima, Peru. Data was organized considering age, sex, main symptoms, and comorbidities. Finally, the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: The most common symptom among inpatients were fever (76.92%), cough (69.23%) and fatigue (46,15%), as well as increased chance of comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension. The highest values of Il-6 were found in ICU patients (168.5 pg/mL), while the reference group had 2.00 pg/mL. On the other hand, the highest Zinc value was in the inpatient group with 0.520 nmol/ul, as opposed to the reference group with barely 0.001 nmol/ul. Conclusions: Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 who had higher plasma concentrations of IL-6 had lower levels of Zinc. Likewise, high levels of this cytokine were associated with factors such as male sex.
