The aim of this research is to identify the influence of the Japanese videogame composers on the musical composition for indie games during the time period of 2010 to 2020. On the first chapter we will analyze the situation of the independent industry of videogames and its presumed chiptune influence, mainly from Japanese composers. We will start by dealing briefly with the story of games musicalization. After that we will analyze the current industry in the United States because this country is where we mainly found the influences. The second chapter will focus on the musical analysis of old and soundtracks considered classics. We will start with a brief introduction to the musical style of various Japanese composers for videogames. Then we will identify characteristics and techniques used in 8 and 16-bit soundtracks along with representative cases and we will analyze evidence of the influence of chiptune on indie videogames supported by the identification of common techniques and characteristics. Continuing with the third chapter, we will do a comparison between the retro and independent soundtracks, aiming to catalogize objectively these similarities. These are: use of similar rhythmic patterns, harmonic progressions, arpeggios structures, melodic treatment and timbres. The results of this investigation may help as a reference for future composers that want to create soundtracks with such a similar aesthetic or style.
