The present research aims to propose a reinforcement with AR fiberglass mesh and high-resistance mortar to reduce the seismic vulnerability of self-built houses with handmade bricks and to compare in terms of cost-benefit with the application of electrowelded mesh. For this, three models of “self-built houses“ located on the side of a hill were identified, which is a reality in the urban populated centers of the periphery of Lima. Then, the linear analysis was performed on these three houses in accordance with the provisions of the Peruvian regulations E.030 and E.070. In this way, it was possible to identify the most vulnerable walls that need to be reinforced. Based on international codes, the contribution of fiberglass meshes and electrowelded meshes was calculated. Likewise, following the provisions of AT-40, the performance design of the houses without reinforcement and with reinforcement was carried out. For this, it was required to carry out the static nonlinear analysis “Pushover“ and the determination of the seismic demand spectra established by the Peruvian standard and of the seismic records, with which the seismic performance level of the As Built houses and of the reinforced houses. Finally, a comparison was made in terms of Cost-Benefit between the reinforcement techniques studied. In this sense, it was obtained that AR fiberglass mesh with high-strength mortar is emerging as a potential reinforcement technique for confined masonry houses.
