In view of the arrival of the metaverse announced by Mark Zuckerberg, this study analyzes how identity is constructed in virtual worlds from the perspective of gamers in higher education in Peru. Game developers found in videogames the ideal transition to the metaverse through virtual worlds. Due to the lack of Peruvian studies on the subject, this project seeks to open a path for researchers and companies wishing to enter this new digital horizon. The research was elaborated with a qualitative methodology of interpretative approach, through semi-structured interviews that were conducted with gamers users within the videogame VRChat. From the perspective that identity is constructed through the expressions of the individual and its environment, the study was divided in three aspects: avatar personalization and psychological attitudes (personal dimension), sociability and virtual interaction (social dimension), and relation of the virtual world and the offline world (spatial dimension). The results of this study revealed that 1. Peruvian users use their avatars as a vehicle for identity experimentation (ideal self), even if their representation differs from their real appearance (offline self). 2. Peruvian users feel that their social interaction in VRChat is more extroverted compared to the offline world because of virtuality. However, it is still debatable by specialists. 3. Users who were more emotionally involved in their online identity more easily established social relationships that transcended from the virtual to the real world.
