Fake news over the years has become a social and digital phenomenon that, today, has become common when information is debated, discussed, disseminated and presented through social networks. Since 2016, with the U.S. presidential elections, the term fake news took on a political connotation that has endured in recent years and election campaigns. In fact during 2016, according to the Oxford dictionary, the term fake news was chosen as the word of the year. New technologies have caused a change in how we access information, with the immediacy of social networks and the growth of prosumers (producers and consumers of content) information has been manipulated and directed to a certain audience with interests in between: political, social or economic. Fake news, as presented by several researchers, is the creation of a parallel truth about a specific topic or event, with the intention of changing and influencing the thinking or opinion of previously acquired knowledge. In the political arena, fake news is capable of jeopardizing the democratic model as well as attacking the informed vote of citizens, creating a scenario of uncertainty and instability. The concern about this phenomenon has led to the practice of fact checking, that is, the verification of everything that is published and disseminated, in order not to create a scenario of disinformation.
