Introduction: To evaluate complementary feeding (CF) practices, there are different tools (weighing food record, 24 hours dietary recall- R24h). However, due to the complexity of its use, simplified indicators are often used where limiting could be its validity. The objective of the study was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of simplified complementary feeding indicators employed in the MONIN 2008-2010. Methods: To evaluate the discriminant capacity of adequate frequency of meals and adequate addition of fats indicators, MONIN 2008-2010 data was used. It was calculated sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp), receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) and Area under the ROC Curve (AUC) of the simplified tool employing as reference R24h data. Results: It was identified that “adequate frequency of meals” indicator has a low discriminant capacity (Se: 95,9, Sp: 12,8, AUC: 0,54). Even when analyzing by age and breastfeeding situation, discriminant capacity did not improve. On the other hand, “adequate addition of fats” indicator also presented a low discriminant capacity (Se: 44,3, Sp: 67,0, AUC: 0,56). However, when analyzing by age group an acceptable discriminant capacity in children 6-8 months (Se: 83,3, Sp: 63,5, AUC: 0,73) was observed. Conclusions: The simplified complementary feeding indicators employed in the MONIN 2008-2010 do not show good discriminant capacity to evaluate complementary feeding in children 6-23 months of age. Thus, it is necessary to identify another short duration tool that has better capture nutritional indicators in childhood.
