The portrayal of the homosexual community in audiovisual media has increased considerably during the last fifty years, as Webb (2021) suggests, when the author writes about the first “positive” homosexual character appearing during the 1970s decade. This happens to mean, as Ward et al. (referred by Verne Ugarte (2020)) state, an acceptance of gay or lesbian people that may improve both in the cases of those who show coexistence attitudes as for those who do not. However, as the years went by, several theses have appeared regarding to the masculinity that is portrayed “on the screen” when we watch male homosexual characters. On this topic, authors like Espinoza & Estrada Orozco (2018) have spoken, who refer us to the hegemonic notion of “being a man”, and its complicated coexistence with what they define as “marginalized masculinities”. Having stated this, it is the aim of the present project to analyze the portrayal of male homosexual characters of the 2003 Angels in America miniseries, produced by HBO, which recreates a New York city amidst the 1980s, that, as Hammack & Cohler (2011) state, was a context in which homosexual community was harshly stigmatized due to the HIV proliferation. To comply with the objective, a content analysis instrument will be employed, working under an interpretive paradigm, taking into consideration criteria such as the fluidity of the masculinity of characters of that sexual orientation, or whether the portrayed characteristics are deeply associated with the idea of patriarchal masculinity.
