The pharmaceutical industry in Peru is very productive, mainly thanks to the clinical trials carried out in the country by foreign pharmaceutical companies to test drugs in the research phase. These companies write the documentation needed for their research in English, as it is the language of scientific dissemination. Since Peru is not an English-speaking country, all clinical research documentation must be translated to Spanish—and given the large amount of documents generated and their importance and time-sensitive nature, machine translation is a great tool to achieve this goal. One of these documents is the informed consent form that clinical research subjects receive. However, the machine translation output is not perfect on a lexical-semantic, morphological-syntactic or stylistic-pragmatic level; even more so when this output must be adapted to the Peruvian context with lexemes and references that clinical research subjects can understand, since understanding what an informed consent says is vital to ensure their voluntariness and protect their rights. This work will propose a post-editing model from English to Spanish of an informed consent form for clinical research aimed at medical translators in Peru. To do this, the results of machine translation and post-editing will be compared; the lexical-semantic, morphosyntactic and stylistic-pragmatic difficulties arising from machine translation will be analyzed; and the post-editing criteria used will be justified based on ted with the use of this format in Peru. Our post-editing model aims to be applied in Peru and to be used as reference for future translations of other informed consents.
