This basic conceptual work focuses on the review of the phenomenon of fake news or false news within social networks, specifically, on its operation within the vast field of political communication. In order to optimally understand this phenomenon, this research was separated into two sub-themes: disinformation and fake news. This was done in this order since, thanks to the analysis of academic material from various authors, it is understood that fake news is a mechanism of disinformation, mostly used within social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, and originally promoted in its “practice“ back in 2016 by the former president of the United States, Donald Trump.
