In May 1980, the subversive actions of the terrorist group Shining Path began, leading to one of the darkest chapters in Peruvian history. Peru experiences modern terrorism for the first time and the press suffers a crisis because it does not know how to cover its acts. This research addresses the treatment newspaper front pages received during their coverage of terrorism in the first years of the Peruvian internal armed conflict. The research begins by stating the problem of magnifying explicit news out of proportion. Out of this, the question arises as to what was the role of newspaper front pages in the spread of Peruvian terrorism. To offer an answer, a compilation was made of previous studies that addressed the relationship between terrorism and the press, the previous which was followed by a theoretical review of concepts on newspaper front pages, the media, terrorism, and the dynamics between these last two. This review ended with the proposal of an instrument to delve deeper into the analysis of the front pages. The study brought to light the role of accomplice played by the media in covering terrorist acts. In the Peruvian case, the extensive coverage through the front pages made them a means by which to spread fear and propaganda, which conditioned the public to respond more firmly to the terrorist threat.
