This research paper identifies the characteristics in the construction of the media trial of Mirella Huamán Santiago, mother of the girl Camila, during the week of her death. Therefore, this research focused on analysing how journalistic coverage has developed in the news reports of the online press and Peruvian television. Along these lines, the journalistic criteria related to the subject were identified and examined. The term “media trial“ refers to the invasive attitude of the media before a police or judicial act, committing a moral assessment against public opinion as the role of judge. Therefore, this study makes it possible to recognize the importance of journalistic construction, through a treatment of reliable information. To reach this point, a quantitative methodology, of descriptive-comparative level and non-experimental design was used. This analysis has made it possible to understand what were the characteristics used in the journalistic coverage in the kidnapping and murder of the girl Camila. In addition, opinion leaders can influence the public through evaluative opinions and use of diminutive words. As a consequence, it can lose objectivity of the news event and generate sensationalism.
